Your Questions Answered
What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a state of the mind somewhere
between full consciousness and sleep. It is a natural state that most people
will enter most days of their lives and is particularly suitable to enable
communication directly with the subconscious mind. For a more detailed

What is hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy involves communicating with the subconscious mind in such a way
that positively influences a person's life by alleviating a particular problem.
Hypnotherapy generally encompasses both suggestion and analysis work, allowing
the therapist to help the client identify negative, destructive beliefs and
substitute for positive, constructive ones. For a more detailed description

In hypnosis/hypnotherapy
would the subject be asleep or unconscious?
No. Subjects may look as
if they are unconscious but they are very relaxed and focusing on the
instructions given to them. It is not uncommon to drift into sleep; however it
has been proven that even when asleep the subconscious mind can receive
instructions.
Can anybody be
hypnotised?
Anybody can be hypnotised and benefit from hypnotherapy
if they want it. Similarly anybody can choose not to be hypnotised. The most
successful subjects are those who put everything into their treatment. Those
people who are best able to follow instructions (mainly mental instructions)
should benefit greatly from these therapies. All you have to do is: be
open-minded, follow instructions and give it 100 percent!
Note:
People suffering from psychosis, bi-polar disorder or other mental illnesses
should not consider hypnotherapy without first seeking medical advice.
Similarly recreational drug users should not attend sessions while under the
influence of any substance.
Do people remember their hypnotherapy sessions?
Most people will remember all their session unless a great deal is
covered and some minor details are forgotten. Similarly if you watched a good
film you may not remember every bit of it, but you would remember the main
parts.
Are some people too strong-willed
to be helped by therapy?
No, not at all! People who think this,
simply don't understand therapy. The therapist doesn't do anything against the
will of the subject but rather the opposite. The therapist is actually working
with the will of the client to achieve the results that the client wants.
Who Are the Most Difficult Subjects for
Hypnotherapy?
I would say people who are either incapable or
unwilling to follow simple instructions. People who are not really prepared to
make any effort are wasting their own time and that of the therapist, as well of
course their money.
Is trance work
always needed?
No it is not always needed and some wonderful results
can be achieved with either very little or no formal trance, particularly with
work on fears and phobias.
Will I feel
different after a session?
There is no right or wrong to how you will
feel immediately after a session. Some people feel like they could tear up
trees, whilst some people feel subdued. Every night that you sleep after a
session, the work that we have done will imprint itself on your unconscious
mind. Some people will immediately announce that they are 'cured' - some people
will experience a change several days later. Everyone is unique! Often people
report being told by others that there is something 'different' about them!
How do I find a therapist?
Hypnotherapy is an honourable profession and there is little or no danger in
being treated by a skilled, registered, properly trained practitioner.
Firstly examine the qualifications. Ideally they should be issued by a
training body or college that has high repute and standards such as the Royal
Berkshire College of Clinical Hypnosis and should be backed by a national
governing body such as the Association for Professional Hypnosis and
Psychotherapy.
Can hypnotherapy be
guaranteed?
As a hypnotherapist I fully expect to help my clients
achieve their aims, but like other medical or complementary therapy
professionals I am bound by a code of ethics which prohibits the giving of
guarantees. (Even the most prestigious, famous and celebrated of doctors and
surgeons do not give guarantees and therefore I would be wary of any
practitioner who offered or promised guarantees.)
